    Frequently Asked Questions

It is the procedure in which the defective bone marrow is replaced by normal. It is not a surgical procedure and only involves medical management.

It is of 2 type Allogenic and Autologous. In allogenic the stem cells are taken from different person who is called the donor. In autologous the stem cells are taken from the patient itself. The principle of autologous BMT is high dose chemotherapy followed by stem cell rescue.

Usually the donor is HLA matched family donor/ haplo or half matched family donor/ Matched Unrelated Donor/Cord Blood Donor from registry.

Usually this process takes 3 – 4 weeks. The process involves conditioning therapy (chemotherapy, immunotherapy, TBI- Total Body Irradiation or a combination of these) then stem cell infusion and then engraftment phase. Duration of stay is less in Myeloma and long in case of thalassemia and Haplo BMTs.

You have to ask your BMT physician what type of conditioning regimen is going to be used as myeloablative regimens are most likely to cause sterility and non-myeloablative regimens usually don’t cause sterility. However, if you wish you can go for sperm or ova cryopreservation. Sperm cryopreservation is simple but ova cryopreservation is complicated and requires general anesthesia as it involves surgical procedure.

No, it is not recommended to call family or friends for visiting. One attendant can stay with the patient and it is recommended that this attendant should not change.
